Call for Applications: Pre/Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for an FWF funded Project at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW)

The Institute for Modern and Contemporary Historical Research (INZ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Vienna seeks to appoint a research fellow with an outstanding academic record. We welcome applications to work on a collaborative research project entitled Between Sultan and Emperor: Imperial Legacies, Religion, and Governance in Ottoman-Habsburg Borderlands, 1800-1900 supervised by Dr. Michael Portmann.

The general goal of this project is to explore and to analyze the political culture, governance, and imperial legacies in the Ottoman-Habsburg borderlands during the nineteenth century. It questions the contested religious, imperial, national, and local legacies during a period framed by competing projects of imperial reform, and nation-building. It also seeks to understand the complexities of Ottoman imperial borderland dynamics from a comparative yet integrated perspective.

About the Fellowship:
The fellowship is available for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility for a six-month extension. The envisaged starting date is February 2017. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Michael Portmann, the Principal Investigator of the project, and with the other members of the project team.

The fellow will receive a total of € 14,000 for the initial period (or € 20,000 if extended). All research related expenses (archive related costs, travel costs, per-diem etc.) will be covered by the project. Research equipment such as a laptop, camera or additional devices will be provided by the institute to the fellow.

The fellow will be affiliated with the Austrian Academy of Sciences and have access to all library facilities of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna.

The candidate does not have to reside in Vienna during the course of the fellowship. However, being able to travel to Vienna in order to attend meetings, seminars, conferences on a regular basis is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to carry out the following tasks:
- to undertake archival research on the project topics (predominantly in Istanbul)
- to collaborate with other fellows in the research team
- to work towards publications with the research team
- to present papers at conferences organized by the research team
- to collaborate with the research team in organizing an international workshop
- to participate (via Skype or in person) in regular meeting sessions with the research team

Application Requirements:
- PhD (or close towards completion) degree in History or any interdisciplinary degree related to history such as Turkish/ Ottoman Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Balkan Studies
- Written and spoken proficiency in English
- Solid archival research experience
- Excellent command of Turkish and Ottoman Turkish
- Knowledge of another relevant research language (e.g., Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian, Armenian etc.) is preferred.
